چکیده

Wayfinding Wayfinding is a complex human activity involving moving along while evaluating alternatives and making decisions. It is defined as a spatial problem solving process with the three sub-processes decision-making, decision execution, and information processing. In our research we focus on the information processing aspect of wayfinding. Our main scientific goal is a cognitively plausible model for the simulation of multi-modal wayfinding in urban environments using cognitive agents. The agents will travel from a given start to a specific destination using different transportation modes and adjusting to the constraints given by traffic networks and the spaces involved. The simulation can serve as basis for a mobile navigation service or it can be used in traffic microsimulations.

Cognitive Maps and Urban Travel

The focus of this chapter is an examination of the relationship between cognitive maps and travel behavior in urban environments. We do this examination incrementally, beginning with clarifications of terms relating to cognitive maps, cognitive mapping and wayfinding. We then emphasize transportation-related issues such as cognizing of transportation networks, path selection, wayfinding and nav...

Modelling Wayfinding in Public Transport: Network Space and Scene Space

Wayfinding in the public transportation infrastructure takes place on traffic networks. These consist of lines that are interconnected at nodes. The network is the basis for routing decisions; it is usually presented in maps and through digital interfaces. But to the traveller, the stops and stations that make up the nodes are at least as important as the network, for it is there that the compl...

A Conceptual Model of Wayfinding Using Multiple Levels of Abstraction

Wayfinding is part of everyday life. This study concentrates on the development of a conceptual model of human navigation in the U.S. Interstate Highway Network. It proposes three different levels of conceptual understanding that constitute the cognitive map: the Planning Level, the Instructional Level, and the Driver Level. This paper formally defines these three levels and examines the concep...

User-based Vehicle Route Guidance in Urban Networks Based on Intelligent Multi Agents Systems and the ANT-Q Algorithm

Guiding vehicles to their destination under dynamic traffic conditions is an important topic in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Nowadays, many complex systems can be controlled by using multi agent systems. Adaptation with the current condition is an important feature of the agents. In this research, formulation of dynamic guidance for vehicles has been investigated based...

Wayfinding in Scene Space

One of the characteristics of public transport is the need for transfers. During transfers, travellers are pedestrian wayfinders and have to find their way from the place of arrival to the place of departure of another means of transport. Wayfinding in public transport takes place in two types of spaces: network space and scene space. Network space includes the transport network. Scene space co...
